Chilean Geodetic Observatory Faces Post-Quake Difficulties

GPS OCX Contract Awarded: Some Observations

The United States Air Force awarded the long-awaited and often delayed next phase of the GPS OCX contract this afternoon. There were two competitors, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. The contract was awarded to Raytheon Space System of Aurora, Colorado. The almost $850 million contract is for the ground support and space control segment of the Global Positioning System.

AEP 5.5C Update Update: Bugs Identified, Being Fixed

On January 11, 2010, when the GPW Wing and the 2SOPS loaded the updated AEP 5.5C software to the "B" side of the ground control segment, it immediately caused a problem with a specific subset of GPS SAASM receivers. A second, unrelated problem manifested in different receivers two weeks later. Both glitches have now been located and identified, and remedies are ongoing.

Caltrain to Equip Trains with GPS for Real-Time Delay Updates

Riders of the San Francisco Bay-area's Caltrain system will be able to call or go online to check delay information starting in spring 2011. The Caltrain board of directors signed a $1.8 million deal on December 3 with a Maryland-based transportation firm to install GPS tracking technology in its trains. The transit operator will use the system to post expected arrival times of trains at all station platforms from San Francisco to San Jose online at 511.org and on the 511 phone system.

New FAA Regulation Requires Confirmation of RAIM Availability
|
On July 1, a provision in U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular AC90-100A came into effect requiring receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) availability to be confirmed where GNSS is the sole navigation aid for area navigation (RNAV) procedures on low-altitude "T routes" and high-altitude (above 18,000 feet) "Q routes" that shorten the geographical distance compared to previous routing. RAIM ensures that the GPS receiver can validate its position calculations.

Demo models from the Institute of Navigation's first Mini-Urban Challenge, a contest among high school students for miniature autonomous vehicles, took the center ring on the floor at the ION GNSS Exhibition. High school students worked in teams of 3 to 10 to design and operate a robotic unmanned car built from a LEGO Mindstorms kit that can accurately navigate through a LEGO city. Challenge Co-chairs First Lieutenants Casey Miller and Caroline New of the Air Force Research Laboratory presented results of the 2009 event, and unveiled plans for the 2010 Challenge, sponsored by ION and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Commercial Ships Traverse Northwest Passage

As reported by the Associated Press, two German merchant ships have traversed the Northeast Passage after global warming and melting ice opened a route from South Korea along Russia's Arctic coast to Siberia. The The MV Beluga Fraternity and MV Beluga Foresight traveled from Ulsan, South Korea, in late July to Siberia by way of the Northeast Passage, a sea lane that, in years past, was avoided because of its heavy ice floes. The ships are expected to complete their journey, heading for Rotterdam in the Netherlands with 3,500 tons of construction parts.

Antenna-Based Control System Can Stop a Train

Technology exists to design a system that can start applying a train's brakes if an engineer fails to obey stop signals. Positive Train Control (PTC), a system that monitors railroads through a wireless network, can help to prevent train crashes and enhance railroad safety.
